Utopiberättelse - The best day ever

It's a cold and beautiful day in the beginning of December. Big white snowflakes are slowly falling from the sky, making the ground thicker. I walk away from the window and down the stairs into the kitchen to make breakfast. I start to think about how great life is and how wonderful the world looks nowadays. Then I remember a history book from the school's library. There is a chapter which tells how the world looked like 200 years ago. Earth was threatened by global warming and the glaciers was nearly about to melt. But then, around 2013, people started to think about earth's future for real and speculated about how it would look like if mankind didn't do anything about it before it was too late. They tried everything to make the world a better and more environment-friendly place to live on and the good news is that they made it! When I look out of the window or walk in the streets, I can't imagine that the world actually was about to fall apart two centuries ago, it seems so strange to me. I finish eating my sandwich and go into the bathroom to take a shower. I'm going to meet some friends in the city later. First I push the button on the wall in the shower that turns on the water and then the button that increases the warmth. As I shampoo my hair I keep thinking about the chapter from the history book. I wonder how it was like to live in that world, a world completely different from ours. 200 years ago, the people had many kinds of different jobs. Today most of the jobs are done by robots, machines, computers and such. Of course there are people who still works nowadays, we have to make a living, but we mostly work with coming up with new stuff that can help people at home, at school, at work and on the streets. I get out from the bathroom and go upstairs again. The spotlights in the ceiling switch on as I walk into my room. I get dressed and go over to the white make-up table and sit down on the soft chair. I call for Lucy, my personal assistant who is actually a computer that I built. I can hear her footsteps in the hall outside and the next second she stands behind me. "Do you want help to get fixed?" she asks me. "Yes, please. You can do as you want" I answer. She takes the hairdryer and starts to dry my hair. The warm air feels great against the skin and I close my eyes for a few seconds. She sprays some condition in my hair, to make it softer, and begins styling it. With the hair done she puts on some make-up. "There! All done! What do you think?" she asks. "Great! Thank you, Lucy. I have to go now, but I'll bring my cell phone, so you can call me if you want something" I say as we walk downstairs to the front door. "I will be back by four. Bye!" I give her a hug and walk out of the house. While I go to the bus stop I think about what a great invention Lucy is. A living computer, does it even exists such a great thing? I don't think so, and that's why I will make it big after I have taken my exams the next semester or earlier, if I get a chance to. I walk through to my friends that are waiting for me in front of a big and beautiful fountain. "Hi, guys! I was just thinking about what a great invention Lucy is" I started to say. "A computer that..." "...that act, thinks, have feelings and looks like a real human. It also does whatever you want it to" one of them finishes my sentence. "Yeah, we know. You've already told us that a few times before" everybody, including me, laughs. "Sorry guys, I won't talk about it more today, but I must tell you what I will call it" I say. "Okay, let us know then!" they say with curiosity and I proudly answer: "I call it Personal Assistant". "That's a great name! It really tells us about what it is! Well, should we go shop now?" one of them happily says. While we shop, we talk about how great it is with democracy, how good our president is and how safe you feel all the time. I look up and see a big sign on the wall of a tall building. The sign says: Future is Technology. It is true, future really is technology and it's becoming more alive. I think about Lucy and that I should go home soon. I bought her some new clothes earlier that I hope she will like. "Hey, guys? I have to go home now. I promised Lucy that I would be back by four" I say to my friends after a while. "Oh, okay. We'll see you tomorrow then. Bye!" one of them says and everyone hugs me goodbye.

I get of the bus at Lucy Street, which is where I live and what I named Lucy after, and inhale the cold and fresh air which makes me shudder a bit. I walk through the neighbourhood and watch all the big and modern houses that are filled with technical things. Many of the houses are in brick or concrete to be able to withstand any possible weather. The gardens are big and in the summer they are green and filled with flowers, plants and fruit trees in many different species. Some gardens have swimming pools in strange and modern structures, which fit in good with the houses and their gardens. Finally I look up at my own house. I walk up to the white brick-house and stands on the stairs for a while to watch our own garden. A thick and white snow blanket hides the ground. I think about how it uses to look like in the summer. The hedge, which has almost the same green colour as the grass, rise up in the light blue sky and in front of it, big yellow helianthus, pink tulips and white roses blooms. I go around the house to the backyard. A big Christmas tree stands in the middle of the garden. It must be Lucy who put it there and decorated it with glitter and lights. She's so kind and helpful. She is like an older sister to me. I go inside the house and call for Lucy who comes running to welcome me home with a big hug. She helps me with my clothes while I put away my shoes. "How was your day?" she asks as I put on my slippers that smells like roses due to a new invention that makes the slippers smell good all the time. "It was good. I also bought you some clothes that I hope you will like. Let's go to my room so you can try them on!" I tell her and give her a shopping bag.

Two hours have gone since I came home and we're eating dinner at the moment. The whole family is at home now and we tell each other about our days. Lucy tells everyone that she's been home today to put up all the Christmas decorations. It looks beautiful and comfortable now. The really good news is that it is only 19 days left to Christmas Eve and I think I'm going to buy Christmas presents tomorrow. I finish eating my dinner and tell Lucy to follow me to my room. While in my room me and Lucy tries to decide what clothes we should wear at Christmas Eve and on New Years Eve. After trying out some dresses, skirts and shirts me and Lucy agrees that we should buy new clothes tomorrow. I look at the digital watch on the wall: December 5th 2209, 22.04. "Is it this late already?!" I burst out so sudden that Lucy gives a jump. "Sorry Lucy, I didn't mean to scare you. Let's go to bed now so we're not too tired tomorrow morning". "It's okay, let's sleep well tonight" she says. "Good night".

It's been six months since Christmas and it is a wonderful and warm day. I will take my exams tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it very much. That is because I'm going to make my Personal Assistant famous by opening my own company. I will employ some people to the company that can follow my instructions and build the Personal Assistant for me. I get dressed and walk downstairs into the kitchen to get some lunch. Lucy serves me a plate with pancakes and a glass of cold milk. She sits down on the chair next to mine. "Lucy, can you please help me organize my things for tomorrow?" I ask Lucy and take another bite on my pancake. "Of course, just tell me what to do and I'll gladly help you out" she says and smiles at me. "Thank you" I smile back at her and drink up my milk. Lucy follows me to my room to help me prepare for tomorrow. I'm so excited and all I do while Lucy helps me, is talking about tomorrow and my plans for the future. We keep organizing my things and planning until it's time for dinner, when I tell everyone at the table how fast I think this day has gone. After dinner it is time to go to bed, so I go upstairs and into the bathroom to take a shower and brush my teeth. When I'm ready I change to my pyjamas and fall asleep as fast as my head touches the soft pillow.

A thin ray of sunlight meets my eyes as I open them in the morning. The sky is blue and the white fluffy clouds are floating around here and there. I look at the digital watch on the wall. June 4th 2209, 08.36 it says. Good, then I have a lot of time left until the ceremony. I walk downstairs to eat the great breakfast that my mum made for me in honour of the day. Everyone is already sitting around the table and they smile at me as I show up in the kitchen. "Good morning everyone" I say and feel comfortable. "Good morning, sit next to me!" my younger brother says with keenness. "Okay, I will if you take it easy for a while" I say and smile. Everyone talks and laughs as we eat the tasty breakfast. "Will I have a breakfast like this too, mum?" my younger brother asks. "Only if you do well in school, like your sister" she answers and I can see my dad smiling for himself. "It's time for you to get ready now" Lucy says. We thanks mum for the breakfast and go upstairs to get dressed. I put on my new white dress and a pair of white sandals with high heel. I go over to the mirror to watch myself. "You look wonderful" Lucy says and come over to stand next to me. "Thank you, Lucy. You too" I answer and go over to the white make-up table. Lucy makes an advanced hairstyle for me and put on some make-up so I look fresh and even more beautiful in everyone's eyes. It is 10:30 now and everyone gets into the car to go to where the ceremony is going to be hold in half an hour. It is so exciting and I am so nervous when we get out of the car that my legs are shaking horribly. Lucy lays her hand on my shoulder and tells me to calm down and that I should be proud and happy. I feel a bit more comfortable as I walk over to my classmates in the big assembly room. It is bright and roomy in there and the atmosphere is joyful. The principal beg everyone to be quiet and tell the students to line up in their classes. "I'm taking the exams now!" I think to myself and look at the floor so that nobody can see the big smile I have in my face right now. When the principal calls out my name, my heart skips a beat because of nervousness. I walk over to where the principal is standing and look into his kind blue eyes. "Congratulations to your exam!" everybody applause. "I think the men over there wants to have a word with you after the ceremony" he whispers with a big warm smile and discreetly nod his head to the right.

"Excuse me, misters, but the principal said that you wanted to have a word with me?" I tell the men the principal nodded at, politely. "Yes, if you are the girl who has built a robot named Lucy?" the man to the left answers. "That is me, sir. I am going to make it a big investment in the world" I say and smile, like I've been doing the whole day. "I think we can help you with that. We have actually been trying to build a robot like yours, but we've never succeeded. Then we heard from a friend of ours, that a female student at his school has built a robot that is like a real human. Your principal told us a bit about you and we think that you seem like a really smart woman. We would be really honoured if you would like to work with us by building these robots that you came up with. We will make it famous, as you wish for, and of course you will be paid for it" the man to the right says. "Are you serious? Because if you are serious, I can give you my answer right now and that answer will be yes!" I say loud and happy. "Okay, then. Just visit this address tomorrow at three o'clock, if you are interested, and we will tell you the details. Don't forget to bring Lucy with you" the man to the left says with a smile and both of them shake my hand. "Good bye, I hope we will see you tomorrow" the man to the right says. They jump into a shiny black car and drives away. A few seconds I stand where I am, until someone pokes me on my shoulder. "Hi" I hear a familiar voice and turn around. "Steven, hi" I say when I recognize him. "I heard your conversation with those men. Are they going to make you famous?" he asks nicely. "No, not me, but Lucy is going to be world famous. Those men are going to help me with that" I tell him. "Okay, so that's how it is? The reason I want to talk to you is because I wonder if you want to go out with me tomorrow night" he says and look at me with a smile on his face. "Yeah, sure, of course I want to! What time fits you the best?" I look into his beautiful brown eyes. "Is six o'clock okay?" he asks. "Yes, it is perfect! Let's meet in front of the big fountain in the city. See you tomorrow at six" I say and wave at him while smiling bigger than ever. "Yeah, bye!" he calls. "I can't imagine what has just happened. I got a new job and a date with the school's most handsome guy on the same day. I must be dreaming" I think to myself.

When we come home I tell Lucy and the rest of my family the good news. Everyone is so happy for me and we decide to celebrate both the exam and my new job. After dinner I go upstairs into the bathroom to wash away the make-up and brush my teeth. I also take a fast shower to calm down a bit. When I'm done in the bathroom, I walk into my room. The spotlights in the ceiling switch on as I enter. While I'm changing my dress to a pair of pyjamas, I suddenly feel so tired. The spotlights went off as I lay my head on the soft pillow and close my eyes with a smile. "Everything in this world is so perfect and tomorrow is going to be the best day of my life. This is my utopia" I think to myself and fall asleep with a smile on my face.
